Chamber News – November Issue

Thoughts From Your President

My thanks to Melissa and Nathan Thompson for hosting our last Business After Hours of the year at their wonderful bookshop Tea House Books. Regrettably the weather was not kind but we had a large turnout and it was a very fitting culmination to 2008. Tea House Books is a delightful place to do some of your Christmas shopping.

The next Chamber meeting, on Tuesday 9th December at 6.00pm, will be a general meeting which means it is open to all members of the Chamber and not restricted to Committee members. The primary focus of this meeting will be establishing a strategic plan/direction for the Chamber. So if you want your say in what we should be doing for our members, please come along. It would be appreciated if you could RSVP to Denise on 9848 2065 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it by Thursday 4th December in case we need to book a larger meeting room.

Don’t forget that we have our Christmas Fest on Thursday 11th December – full details are included with this mail out. Weather permitting it should be a great evening of family fun.

Business After Hours – Wednesday 4th February 6pm to 8pm

The NAB is generously hosting the first Business After Hours for 2009.  Invitations will be sent our in the New Year. Some of the slots for 2009 are booked but we do have some spaces; this is great way to profile your business and get in touch with the movers and shakers in town. If you think you might like to host a Business After Hours please give Frank or Denise a call on

9848 2065.

Tidy Towns Award

Denmark was the South Coast regional winner in this year’s Tidy Towns Sustainable Communities Award. Projects that contributed to Denmark’s success included a beach and roadside clean up, the Litter Free Denmark Campaign, the Weed Action Group and projects undertaken by the Community Climate Change Committee and involvement in the Shire’s climate change and clean power projects. Congratulations to all those involved. It is good to see your efforts being recognised in such a clear way and it provides a great incentive to keep up the good work.

South of State Hospitality Awards

Congratulations to Emma Chard and Brett Dal Pozzo from Nornalup Teahouse Restaurant who were finalists in the “Best Restaurant Informal Dining” category for the South of State Hospitality Awards. Emma and Brett have had the Nornalup teahouse since August 2006 and have concentrated on representing the Great Southern in terms of fresh regional food, atmosphere and a local wine list.

Street Banners

Last year wild weather destroyed the old street banners. The Chamber has developed designs for a fresh set of street banners and a copy of these designs are included in this mail out. We also welcome your ideas for banners. At the moment there are 5 banner poles, 3 in Strickland Street and 2 on the South Coast Highway. We are aiming to have a set of banners (ideally 10) that will be regularly rotated and will promote Denmark as a great place to live, work, visit, relax, explore etc.

We are offering our members the chance to sponsor a banner; $100 will buy you your name and logo on the banner, shared with one other business. And $260 means your business name, and yours alone, and your logo will appear on the banner.

Please contact the Chamber by 18th December if you would like to sponsor a banner. If you have any queries about the designs or thoughts of your own, please contact Heather Falconer from Denmark Picture it on 9848 2420.
